RefWorks

How to set up and use RefWorks to manage your references and create your reference list.

Connect to RefWorks button

What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is an online reference manager. It is designed to help you keep track of your research and make the referencing process easier.

It can help you to:

  • Manage large numbers of references
  • Organise references into topics or folders
  • Generate in-text citations and reference lists
  • Instantly change your references into a large number of styles, including Cite Them Right Harvard

Does RefWorks do all of my referencing for me?

No. RefWorks can make the process faster but it isn't perfect. You will need to check the reference information RefWorks has found and make edits to ensure it matches your required referencing style.

If you need advice on what your referencing style should look like, use our Cite Them Right platform.

If you don't know what referencing style you are required to use, check your module handbook.

Accessing RefWorks

Logging in for the first time

Use the Connect to RefWorks button at the top of this page to access RefWorks.

The first time you access RefWorks, it will ask you to enter your name and e-mail address. Make sure to use your GCU e-mail address.

The RefWorks login screen

You may see this login screen.

The login screen for RefWorks. There are boxes for your e-mail address/password and a Sign In box - we do not use these. At the bottom of the page is a 'Use login from my institution' button which is highlighted.

Select Use login from my institution and begin typing in Glasgow Caledonian University. Select Glasgow Caledonian University from the list and log in with your usual GCU details.

Referencing styles in RefWorks

At GCU, the most commonly used referencing style is Cite Them Right Harvard.

If you created your RefWorks account after 1st September 2025, your default style will be set to Cite Them Right, 13th ed – Harvard (GCU: CTR 13).

If you signed up before this date, you’ll need to update your default style manually. You might also need to change it if your module leader has asked you to use a different style, such as Vancouver or APA.

How to change your referencing style in RefWorks

1. Click on Citation View on the right-hand side of your screen.

2. Select the gear icon next to Citation View.

3. Choose Institutional styles from the drop-down menu.

4. Browse the list of referencing styles used at GCU.

4. Select the style you need and click Save.
